After releasing his first album in 2002, Diljit realized that live performances would become his biggest source of income. Although he was initially hesitant about performing at birthday parties and weddings, he soon realized the economic opportunities it offered.
“It’s amazing. There’s a lot of money in this area,” he said. Recalling the early days of his career, Diljit said that after the release of his debut album in 2002, some people approached his company to book him to perform at birthday parties. Although he initially had no interest in singing at such events, he accepted the offers because he was bound by a contract. He added that he soon realized that album sales alone would not provide financial stability, and the payment he received for those performances convinced him that live gigs were the way forward.
He said, “I didn’t refuse anyone. If someone offered Rs 5,000, 10,000 or 15,000, I said yes. I didn’t refuse anyone. I went everywhere day and night.”

Diljit said that his desire to perform wherever work was available was inspired by his desire to overcome the financial difficulties he faced in his childhood. He explained that becoming “rich and famous” was not just a dream, but a necessity born of his circumstances.
The singer also explained why he eventually stopped performing at weddings. According to him, some senior artistes of the Punjabi music industry considered those performances inferior and believed that they were suitable only for that scope. Instead of letting those things define him, Diljit decided to focus on organizing his own concerts.
Recalling his childhood, Diljit said, “I came from a poor family. It was a below average income family. If someone fell ill, there was no money to go to the doctor, so it was better not to fall sick because there was no money.”
On the work front, Diljit was last seen in Imtiaz Ali’s ‘Main Wapsar Aaunga’, which also starred Naseeruddin Shah, Vedang Raina and Sharvari. The film was released in theaters on 12 June.
