There was a time when a music director had clearly told him that “Your voice is not fit to become a singer.” Then, AR Rahman came as the key to their destiny and changed everything.

Journey from good dancer to music

Born on 13 May 1984 in Abu Dhabi, Benny Dayal’s childhood was colored by dance. He took training in Bharatnatyam, Kuchipudi and Mohiniyattam for 14 years. Also learned Carnatic music, but he never dreamed of becoming a singer. During his school days, he used to participate in dance competitions and also won. Everyone knew him as a good dancer.

One day when someone heard him singing, he said that he sings better than dancing. This praise forced him to think. Then his life changed after listening to the song of the film “Dil Se” in the bus. He decided that music was his future.

On the very first day of the job, A.R. Rahman’s phone

After completing school, Benny wanted to go to Chennai, but his father wanted him to study in Pune. There was silence between father and son for two months. Ultimately it was decided that we would complete our studies first. In college, Benny formed a band and sang different types of songs. But the path to professional career was not easy. He went from place to place and requested to sing in the chorus, but received negative responses everywhere. A music director clearly said that his voice was not fit to be a singer. Benny was devastated between financial constraints, father’s illness and family responsibilities. Ultimately, on the advice of his senior, he took up an HR job in BPO.

But fate had something else in store. On the first day of joining the job, Benny got a call from AR Rahman. Rehman had heard Beni’s religious song and liked his voice. In the year 2008, Benny got the song ‘Chinnamma, Chilakamma’ for the Tamil film ‘Sakkarakatti’. This was the biggest break of his life. AR Rahman not only established him in South Indian cinema but also brought him into the Hindi film industry. The song ‘Kaise Mujhe Tum Mil Gayi’ from the film ‘Ghajini’ became a superhit. Benny Dayal has sung songs in many languages ​​including Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada, Hindi, Bengali, Gujarati and Marathi. He can also sing in French and Arabic. The singer, who has worked with musicians like Himesh Reshammiya, Pritam, Salim-Sulaiman, Amit Trivedi, says that even today, before every recording, he feels that his voice may not be right for the song. They let the music come from the heart and do not hold hatred in their hearts.

In the year 2016, Benny Dayal married model Catherine Thangam. He also composes independent songs and performs live in India and abroad.
