Actor and standup comedian Veer Das is in the news these days, but this time the reason is not his new show, but the country’s Parliament (Lok Sabha). Trinamool Congress MP Abhishek Banerjee, during the discussion on Budget 2026-27, mentioned Veer Das’s famous and controversial monologue ‘Do Bharat’, which surprised even Veer Das himself.

What did Abhishek Banerjee say?

Addressing the House on Tuesday, Abhishek Banerjee termed Vir Das’s 2021 speech as a ‘prophecy’. He said, ‘In November 2021, Vir Das talked about ‘two Indias’ on the Kennedy Center stage. Many people laughed and some were angry. But what he said was not comedy, but a warning. It was a mirror in front of a country which is standing on the edge of its own confusion.

Veer Das’s reaction

Veer Das expressed his surprise by posting a video on this speech. Giving a line by line reaction, he said that he could not believe that he was being discussed on the floor of Parliament. In a joking tone he said, ‘This is happening in Parliament? Don’t do that! I remember some people were angry, but who stopped to listen? Did you get a warning? No, I got a warning.
Veer also quipped that this is the right time to announce his world tour and said, ‘I am leaving the country and going on a world tour.’

What was the ‘two India’ dispute?

In 2021, Vir Das read a poem at the Kennedy Center in Washington that talked about two different aspects of India (like respect for women versus increasing crime against them). At that time, many complaints were filed against him in India and he was accused of insulting the country on the international platform.
