Recently, in a conversation with Vicky Lalwani, Mumtaz told that she had a deep relationship with Rajesh Khanna, she used to visit that bungalow often and many memories related to it are still close to her heart. Recalling Rajesh Khanna’s bungalow ‘Aashirvaad’, Mumtaz said, ‘I was very sad. Even today when I see that building, I say that this was my hero’s house.

Mumtaz also told that her own house, which she had bought from Maani Kumari, was very close to ‘Aashirvaad’. ‘Our house on Carter Road earlier belonged to Meena Kumari and was near Rajesh Khanna’s bungalow. I used to go there often.

Recalling those days, he said that both Anju Mahendru and Rajesh Khanna took great care of him. ‘When Anju was with him, she used to call me. When I used to go after my engagement with Mayur, I used to take him along with me. Kaka and Anju took great care of us. Eat, take this, take that. People of the film industry are very big at heart.

Regarding Rajesh Khanna’s bungalow ‘Aashirvaad’, Mumtaz said that her wish was that it should be converted into a museum after his death. ‘The dream was that it would be made a museum, but after his departure I don’t know why it was sold.’ However, he clearly refused to speculate too much on this. ‘I heard there were some problems, but I don’t know what the truth is. When the truth is not known, one should not comment.

Mumtaz said that her relationships in the industry have always been long-term. ‘I am a very emotional person. When I love or befriend someone, it is forever. I was very close to Anju and Kaka.

Mumtaz shared her experience of working with Rajesh Khanna and said that she had a complete understanding of his habits. He said, ‘No, I did not face any problem, because he used to come and complete his work. There was an understanding between us – I knew he would come late, but would finish the work.

She told that she used to adjust her schedule accordingly. Sometimes there were arguments, but I adjusted a lot. The director used to take my solo shots first. I used to ask myself whether to do it in high pitch or low and used to perform accordingly. ‘When he used to come, we used to shoot scenes together. After that my pack-up was done. I used to tell them that my close-ups are done, now you do your part. You are late, I am going.
