Birth and family
Surya was born on 23 July 1975 in Chennai. His father’s name was Shivakumar, who was a Tamil actor and mother’s name was Lakshmi. He studied at Padma Sheshadri Bala Bhavan School and St. Bede’s Anglo Indian Higher Secondary School. Then obtained degree from Loyola College, Chennai. Before he started working in Tamil films, Suriya worked in a clothing company for some time.
Even though the Tamil film industry and its fans also know the actor by the name of Surya. But his real name is Saravanan Shivakumar. Director Mani Ratnam named him Surya. So that there is no clash of his name with actor Saravanan.

Surya entered Tamil films in the year 1997 with the film ‘Nerukku Ner’. Surya’s four years in the industry were not good. But in the year 2001, the actor got his big break with the film ‘Nanda’. This film was commercially successful. The actor received the Tamil Nadu State Film Award for Best Actor for this film.
