Why is Rajpal Yadav in jail?
This legal case related to Rajpal Yadav dates back to 2010, when the actor had borrowed Rs 5 crore from Murali Projects Private Limited to finance his film ‘Aata Pata Lapata’. The film flopped at the box office, which put a lot of financial pressure on Yadav and made it difficult for him to repay the loan. Later, several checks given to repay the loan bounced, prompting the lender to initiate legal action under the Negotiable Instruments Act.
In April 2018, a magistrate court found the ‘Bhool Bhulaiyaa’ actor and his wife guilty under section 138 of the Act and sentenced them to six months in jail. Yadav challenged the decision through several appeals, but the matter remained unresolved for years. During this period, the outstanding amount reportedly increased to around Rs 9 crore even though some payments were made, including Rs 75 lakh due in 2025.
As the delays continued, criticism of the court increased, and the lack of seriousness in paying the dues despite repeated opportunities was seen. On February 4, 2026, Justice Swarn Kanta Sharma rejected Yadav’s last request for a week’s extension to arrange funds, saying that no matter what his public identity was, no further leniency could be granted. The court ordered him to surrender immediately.
Rajpal Yadav surrendered in Tihar Jail at around 4 pm on Thursday evening to serve his six-month sentence. The money already deposited in the court has been given to the complaining company, due to which an important chapter of this long running case has been closed.
