Famous tabla player Ustad Zakir Hussain is no more. The legendary tabla player passed away on Sunday, December 15 in San Francisco, USA. He was receiving treatment for cardiac complications in the ICU of a hospital there. Reportedly, his demise was caused by idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, a chronic lung disease.

About Ustad Zakir Hussain

Born on March 9, 1951, Zakir Hussain was the son of the great tabla player Ustad Allah Rakha. His extraordinary talent in playing the tabla earned him recognition across the country at an early age. In his teens, Zakir was already performing with some of India’s most renowned classical musicians.

During his illustrious career, Ustad Zakir Hussain worked with leading figures in both traditional Indian and global music circles. He worked with luminaries such as Pandit Ravi Shankar and Ustad Vilayat Khan and was instrumental in the creation of international fusion groups such as Shakti with guitarist John McLaughlin and Planet Drum with the Grateful Dead’s Mickey Hart.

His unmatched skills have made him a global star with four Grammy wins. He was also awarded the prestigious Padma Shri (1988) and Padma Bhushan (2002) by the Government of India.
