New rules have been announced for the 99th edition of the Academy Awards (Oscars), the world’s most prestigious cinematic honor. The rules, released Friday by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS), are set to make the 2027 ceremony more competitive and modern than ever. New rule of Oscars 2027: Multiple acting nominations allowed in the same category
According to the official press release, in the acting category, actors can now be nominated for more than one performance in the same category, provided both performances are in the top five votes. Also, only those roles that are officially credited and voluntarily played by real people will be considered.
New rules for international feature films
The Academy has introduced two ways for a film to qualify for this category. In addition to being selected by a country’s official committees, any non-English film can now qualify by winning top awards at major international festivals such as Cannes, Berlin, Venice, Sundance, Toronto and Busan.
Another important change is that now this award will be given to the film and not to the country. The director will accept the Oscar, and his name will be engraved on the trophy along with the name of the film.
Oscars 2027: New rules for use of AI in films
The Academy can now ask filmmakers to explain how they used generative AI in their films and how much of that work was done by humans.
