Millie Bobby Brown reacts to the controversial ending of Stranger Things season 5, which created quite a reaction among viewers, with many becoming very emotional over the fate of the show’s main character Eleven. The final episode saw the group move on with their lives after defeating Vecna, with some characters going off to college. Eleven, played by Brown, sacrificed herself, a moment that shocked both fellow characters and fans.
Speaking to Tudum, Brown described Eleven’s decision to stay behind as “beautiful and comforting”, adding that she felt it was a perfect ending for the character. She added, “I just think it’s very important that everything is over for her, and that the sadness and the pain are over,” emphasizing that Eleven’s storyline came to a necessary conclusion.
The series’ creators, the Duffer brothers, explained that the finale was designed so that every character made a meaningful contribution to defeating Vecna. Matt Duffer said, “Each character has a special skill, and they get to bring it to this final battle.” The spirit of teamwork was intentionally reminiscent of the cooperative spirit of a Dungeons & Dragons campaign.
He elaborated, “Everyone contributes in some meaningful way… In that sense, it also feels like the climax of a Dungeons & Dragons campaign, where each character has a special skill, and they’re able to bring it to this final battle.”

Eleven’s part in defeating Vecna required her to “use” abilities within herself that she had never used before. Brown shared her perspective on this moment, saying, “It’s very new to me because I think there’s a finality to it,” which reflects the unique emotional weight of the scene for both the character and the actress.
Although Vecna does not survive, the finale deliberately leaves some plot points unresolved, particularly regarding whether Eleven truly died. The character Mike speculates about Eleven’s survival, suggesting that Kali’s interference may play a role. Brown found hope in this possibility, saying, “Everything has a purpose, and everything happens for a reason.” Brown also commented, “I really liked that ending, that Kali’s powers have a great purpose. Everything has a purpose, and everything happens for a reason,” showing how much she appreciated the open-ended nature of Eleven’s fate and the great importance of the supporting characters.

Despite ongoing conversation and debate among fans, the Duffer brothers have decided not to reveal the true outcome of Eleven’s storyline. This ambiguity has fueled discussions about the series’ ending, leaving the door open to a variety of interpretations. However, Brown has made it clear that he is satisfied with the way his character’s journey ended.
