Following the controversy over making fun of Tamil cinema veteran composer Ilaiyaraaja’s copyright dispute, the makers of Suriya-starrer superhit film ‘Karuppu’ have publicly apologized. The controversy pertains to a scene from the song ‘Poradada’ from the 1985 film ‘Alai Osai’, which is followed by a dialogue about Ilaiyaraaja. The dialogue was a jibe at the music legend and his famous copyright strikes against the unauthorized use of his songs in Tamil films. This line was criticized by many fans online, after which the makers responded by expressing regret, clarifying their intentions and announcing changes in future versions of the film.

In its statement, the production house said that the scene using Ilaiyaraaja’s name in ‘Karuppu’ was just a coincidence, which was shot only with the intention of conveying a message. He said that the team had no intention of hurting or tarnishing the musician’s image; He described the musician as a ‘king of music’ who has ruled the music world for more than 50 years.

The statement further added that if Ilaiyaraaja, his associates, his fans or anyone else has been hurt by the scene – which he included in the film without any ulterior motive – the team humbly regrets it.

The makers further said that they understand that a certain dialogue in ‘Karuppu’ has become a cause for concern and has hurt Ilaiyaraaja. He said that he was truly sorry that the dialogue had given rise to such sentiments, and also clarified that he had absolutely no intention of insulting, hurting or disrespecting Ilaiyaraaja, his contributions or his rights in any way.

According to the statement, the mention was part of a larger sarcastic context and was not intended as a direct personal comment on Ilaiyaraaja.

The statement also said that the team greatly values ​​and respects Ilaiyaraaja’s sentiments, and as a mark of respect to him, they have decided to remove or alter the relevant portion in future versions of the film and all subsequent releases. With Karuppu continuing to draw audiences to the theatres, the makers have now apologized over the backlash over the Ilaiyaraaja reference and said the dialogue will be changed.
