Hollywood’s ‘Captain Jack Sparrow’ i.e. Johnny Depp is known for his films as well as his generosity. According to a recent report, Johnny Depp had anonymously helped late actor Eric Dane in his last days to ease his financial and health-related difficulties. Depp and Dane became close through a mutual acquaintance years ago, leading to the Pirates of the Caribbean star offering his home to Dane in his final months. Page Six quoted a source as saying that Depp wanted to help so he wouldn’t have to worry about anything else while fighting the disease.

“He was living rent-free in a house Johnny owned over on the Sunset Strip. He asked Eric to pay the rent, or whatever he might or might not pay,” the report said.

The report added, “Johnny wanted to do whatever he could to ease the financial burden.” News of Dane’s death came Thursday, less than twelve months after he first went public with his amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) diagnosis. The actor has been battling the disease, which is often called Lou Gehrig’s disease, since he informed his fans about the disease last year.

“With heavy hearts, we want to announce that Eric Dane passed away Thursday afternoon after a courageous battle with ALS,” his family said in a statement to People on Thursday.

They added, “He spent his last days surrounded by loving friends, his devoted wife, and his two beautiful daughters, Billie and Georgia, who were the center of his world.” “Throughout his journey with ALS, Eric became a passionate advocate for awareness and research, and was determined to make a difference for others facing the same battle. He will be greatly missed, and will always be remembered fondly. Eric loved his fans and is forever grateful for all the love and support they have received. The family has asked for privacy as we navigate this difficult time,” their statement concluded.

In June 2025, the actor appeared on Good Morning America, where he talked about dealing with only ‘one working hand’. On the show, he said, “My left side is working, my right side has completely stopped working. I think maybe a few more months and my left hand will be gone. It feels very bad.”

Eric Dane was popular among fans as McSteamy, aka Mark Sloan, on Grey’s Anatomy. He joined Shonda Rhimes’s Grey’s Anatomy midway through the second season and became one of the main characters.
