Famous lyricist and writer Javed Akhtar on Sunday shared his important opinion on freedom of expression and cinematic approach. After being honored with a special honor by a prestigious Kolkata jewelery brand, Akhtar spoke candidly to reporters on the ongoing controversies surrounding the film ‘Dhurandhar’ and the political scenario of West Bengal.When he was asked about some recent films like ‘Dhurandhar’ being termed as ‘propaganda’ films, the lyricist said that everyone has the right to express their views.

Akhtar said, “I don’t know what you mean by ‘propaganda’ films. I really liked ‘Dhurandhar’, which is a great film.” He said, ”Every story shows some aspect or the other, but does a story become propaganda just because its plot is not suitable for a section of the audience? Everyone has the right to express their views.” Akhtar said that the job of every filmmaker is to show the truth.
When asked about the upcoming results of the West Bengal Assembly elections, Akhtar said, “Governments keep coming and going; Government is needed to run the society. But Bengal is not known for governments. Bengal is known for its history and literature, which has no connection with any political party.

In 2014, when asked to comment on the BJP coming to power at the Centre, Akhtar said there was bound to be change. “Sometimes changes are undesirable and sometimes desirable,” he said. I believe that the young generation is better than my generation. They will make this society much better.
