South superstar Ram Charan and Jhanvi Kapoor starrer film ‘Peddi’ is in the news these days for a serious controversy associated with it rather than its box office earnings. Jhanvi Kapoor’s character ‘Achiyamma’ in the film is being criticized from all sides for being excessively bold and presenting her as an ‘object’. Now veteran Indian cinema actress and MP Jaya Bachchan has entered this controversy. Jaya Bachchan has strongly condemned such portrayal of women in films. At the same time, Bollywood bebo Kareena Kapoor Khan has also shown the mirror to the filmmakers on this issue.
His comment has come at a time when the makers of ‘Peddi’ are facing criticism for making Jhanvi’s character ‘Achiamma’ in the film with Ram Charan look too sexy. Other people from the industry, like Kareena Kapoor Khan, have also reacted to this controversy, while director Buchi Babu Sana has apologized and said that the objectionable scenes will be removed.
Bachchan, who has often raised issues related to the film industry in Parliament, said it is important to stop such incidents on the sets. He said that when this happened to him, he immediately took action and after that no one dared to do such a thing with him. “Nobody dared to cross the line with me,” he said. She further added, “I had only one bad experience of being treated like an ‘object’ by the director. I never worked with him again.”
According to the report, Bachchan was referring to an incident that happened during the shooting of Manoj Kumar’s film ‘Shor’, in which she played the role of a sex worker. The director wanted her to wear a ghagra-choli throughout the film, but Bachchan insisted that she wear it with a dupatta so that her upper body was covered. This disagreement led to a dispute between them.
Kareena Kapoor Khan also expressed her opinion on this controversy and said that filmmakers have shown sexuality on screen in the past without making women less clothed. He gave the example of Kajol in the song ‘Sooraj Hua Maddham’ from the film ‘Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham’ and said that the actress was seen wearing a saree in the entire song. He said, “Look at Kajol in the song ‘Sooraj Hua Maddham’ from the film ‘Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham’, or Sridevi in the song ‘Tere Mere Lippon Pe’ from the film ‘Chandni’ – they created magic on the screen without even revealing their body. In the song ‘Roop Tera Mastana’ from the film ‘Aradhana’, my mother-in-law (Sharmila Tagore) was covered from head to toe. Yet she was an example of sensuality. I believe. Looking sexy on screen doesn’t mean wearing skimpy or revealing clothes or presenting yourself as just an ‘object’.”
The controversy over ‘Peddi’ started after social media users raised questions over the objectionable portrayal of Jhanvi in the film. In several scenes the camera repeatedly focuses on her navel, cleavage and waist. In one of the most talked about scenes, Ram Charan’s character kisses her without consent and later tries to justify it as the only way to express love.
Many artists from the film industry have raised objections about the portrayal of the heroine in the film. Amid growing criticism, Buchi Babu Sana said in a statement on Saturday that he would remove the objectionable scenes from the film. He also apologized and said that he will keep this in mind in future.Two days after the apology, those scenes remain part of the theatrical version of the film.
