A sensational case of fraud worth crores of rupees has come to light with the family of famous Bollywood actor Javed Jaffrey. Following the complaint of fraud of Rs 16.24 crore lodged by Javed Jaffrey’s wife Habiba Jaffrey, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has taken major action. Mahesh Patil, Assistant Municipal Commissioner of BMC’s ‘K-North’ ward, has been suspended due to allegations of his involvement in this case. This official order of suspension was issued on June 5, which was handed over to him on Sunday (June 7).

An FIR has been lodged at Khar police station against Patil and five others for allegedly defrauding Habiba Jaffrey in connection with the Bandra redevelopment project. According to reports, businessman Nishit Patel has been arrested in this case and produced in the court, which sent him to police custody till May 19.
Patil had earlier been sent on a month’s compulsory leave in November last year due to allegations of “improper investment” related to the same Bandra redevelopment project. At that time he had denied those allegations.
In her complaint, Habiba Jaffrey alleged that she first met Patil at the BMC office, where he told her about a profitable investment opportunity involving the Bandra Redevelopment Project. He further alleged that Patil had advised him to invest through businessman Nishit Patel.

The complaint also alleges that fake government registration documents were created and passed off as genuine to persuade Habiba Jafri, Javed Jafri, their relatives (including Naved Jafri) and others to invest in the project.
According to the complaint, the accused had collected around Rs 16.24 crore from investors through cheques, cash, foreign currency and expensive watches before the alleged fraud. After discovering the fraud, Habiba Jafri approached the Khar police earlier this month, following which an FIR was registered. The matter is now being investigated; Patil has been suspended and Nishit Patel has been arrested in connection with the allegations.
