The relationship between businessman and former IPL chairman Lalit Modi and former Miss Universe and Bollywood actress Sushmita Sen is once again in the headlines. Lalit Modi, who created a stir on the internet by suddenly announcing his relationship on social media in the year 2022, has now revealed the inner reality of this relationship. In a recent interview given to ‘Humans of Bombay’, Lalit Modi has completely rejected the tag of “gold digger” (one who runs after money) on Sushmita Sen and called himself a ‘diamond digger’.

During the interview, Lalit Modi praised Sushmita Sen’s self-reliance and her success. They made it clear that money was never an issue in their relationship. Responding to those calling Sushmita a ‘gold digger’, Modi said: “Sushmita is very beautiful and a very rich woman. Of all the people I know in this world, Sushmita has the most diamonds. She is a very rich woman and she has achieved all this through her hard work. There was a time when I used to go out with her, I did not have to pay for anything. Sushmita used to bear the expenses of everything. “I was just a well-mannered boyfriend.” Lalit Modi further said in a humorous and philosophical tone, “If we say that Sushmita was not a ‘gold digger’, but Lalit was a ‘diamond digger’, then it would not be wrong. And she (Sushmita) was that diamond.”

He further added, “She never took anything from anyone. So, when people called her a ‘gold digger’, it was completely wrong.”

Lalit Modi also spoke openly about the social media post through which the world came to know about their relationship. According to him, Sushmita did not expect at all that he would actually share that post. He told, “I did all this in front of her. She did not think that I would actually post it. We were arguing about something in the plane, when Sushmita said to me, ‘You will not post this.’ I laughed and pressed the post button.”
The businessman recalled that at that time he was returning back to London. He said, “By the time we reached London, there was an uproar all over the world. But, there was nothing wrong in it. Sushmita never asked me to remove that post, and I also never thought of removing it.” Despite the uproar that followed, Modi said that he had no regrets in making this relationship public. She said, “It really took the internet by storm. For a few days, it felt like it was all everyone was talking about. But our story was beautiful and I don’t regret a single moment of it.”
Speaking fondly about Sushmita, Modi credited her for influencing him in many ways and said that she remains an important part of his life’s memories. Modi said, “Sushmita was very special to me. She has played a huge role in whatever I am today. She was very special. She was a very important part of my life at that time. The only problem was that we were too far apart. Her career was in India, and my life was in London. It was a very, very special relationship. I have fond memories of her. I wish only the best for her. She is an amazing woman. And as a single mother, what she has done for her daughters, Rene and Alissa, is truly remarkable.”
Thinking about this relationship, they made it clear that they still respect each other and there is mutual goodwill between them. In an old interview with Mid-Day in 2023, Sushmita had described her relationship with Lalit Modi as “just another phase of life”.
