The real life of Bollywood actress Celina Jaitley is no less than a film script these days. Their story is reminiscent of the 2024 film “Jigra”, where Alia Bhatt crosses boundaries to save her brother. Similarly, Celina is fighting on the legal and diplomatic front for the release of her brother, Major (retd) Vikrant Kumar Jaitley, who has been detained in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) for the last 17 months. Jaitley’s brother Major (retd) Vikrant Kumar Jaitley, a former Army officer and member of the UN peacekeeping mission, has reportedly been in detention in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) for the last 17 months.

According to the actress, her brother was detained from a mall in September 2024, after which no official information about his whereabouts was given for nearly nine months nor was he provided legal aid. Jaitley told ‘PTI-Video’, “I got a call around 9 pm on September 29. At that time I was living in Austria. Initially I thought my brother was joking. For about an hour I thought it was some stupid prank of his.”

She told that this news came at a time when she herself was going through a serious crisis in her personal life. Jaitley said she was in Austria where her husband was abusive and she was trying to save that relationship for her children. She said, “My husband used to torture me but when you have children, you bear everything for them. When you don’t have parents and you don’t have any property, you try your best to save the marriage for the children.
Jaitley said that after marriage, she had stayed away from her film career for 15 years and left her financial responsibilities to her spouse, but she later lost access to her properties and her three sons. Celina Jaitley, who won the ‘Femina Miss India 2001’ title and stood fourth in the Miss Universe competition, has worked in films like ‘No Entry’, ‘Apna Sapna Money Money’, ‘Golmaal Returns’, ‘Zinda’ and ‘Thank You’.
The actress said the news of her brother’s detention devastated her, but standing up for him meant first getting herself out of the situation she was stuck in. He said, “I took this decision in the midst of my fight. I knew that if I did not leave Austria, I would not be able to speak up for my brother. At one o’clock in the night, with almost no money, she bought the ticket with her credit card and came to India.” When no clear information was received at the diplomatic level regarding her brother’s detention, Jaitley filed a habeas corpus petition in the Delhi High Court.
He said that it was only after the petition that the authorities released the case number and confirmed about his brother’s location. He said, “We have only one prosecution number, that too I got after filing a petition in the Honorable Delhi High Court. I was only given a vague reason like ‘national security’.” According to Jaitley, after retirement from the Army, Vikrant was associated with his wife’s company, which dealt with IT, cyber security and human resource services.
He said that it has been confirmed that Vikrant has been kept in Al Wathba detention center in Abu Dhabi. The Delhi High Court recently allowed a UAE-based legal services firm to represent his brother, which Jaitley described as a significant development. Describing herself as a “fourth generation daughter of the armed forces”, Jaitley said she has taken up the matter with the country’s top leadership, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He said, “My brother is an Indian soldier. He cannot be left in custody like this.
