The dispute that started between superstar Ranveer Singh and Excel Entertainment regarding the film ‘Don 3’ has now turned into a legal and diplomatic war. The ‘Non-Cooperation’ directive issued against Ranveer Singh by the Federation of Western India Cine Employees (FWICE) has shaken the entire film industry. This development has given rise to a new and very serious debate in the corridors of Bollywood—this debate is not just about a film, but about power, accountability and whether a film organization can really “ban” a big star completely in today’s era?

“I didn’t expect the situation to get so bad” – Trade Expert Girish Johar

Well-known film industry expert and producer Girish Johar is also surprised by the controversy reaching this level. Speaking in an interview, he said: “I was not expecting this at all. I thought the matter would be resolved amicably. Being a colleague from the industry, I feel sitting together and talking is the right way to resolve such issues.” This situation has arisen when FWICE held a press conference and announced non-cooperation with Ranveer Singh and supported the demand of the producers (Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani) in which they have sought compensation for the alleged financial loss of Rs 45 crore incurred in pre-production.

His comments come after FWICE officially announced its decision at a press conference on Monday. The decision comes after Ranveer Singh’s sudden exit from the long-delayed film franchise, backed by Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani’s company Excel Entertainment. The Federation has clearly said that until this dispute is resolved, no cooperation will be done with the actor. Additionally, the federation has also supported the producers’ demand for compensation for the alleged loss of Rs 45 crore incurred in pre-production.

big question

This controversy has now sparked a huge debate within Bollywood: What exactly does a “ban” imposed by a film body mean? Can this actually stop an actor from working, or is it just a tactic to force a conversation?

According to Johar, the reality is more complicated than what is printed in the headlines. However, such instructions create noise and slow down the pace of work for some time, but they do not make any actor go out of the industry overnight. He explains, “When a particular organization raises an issue or imposes a ban, other producers also pay attention to it. There may be some delay in the process or the pace of work may slow down.”

This means that producers may be cautious for some time, meetings may be postponed and projects may even be put on hold for some time, until the situation becomes completely clear. But Johar insists that Bollywood does not work under any one central authority.

He says, “There are many bodies within the industry. No one body has all the power. It’s an important body, a respected body, and everyone listens to it.”

FWICE vs Ranveer: A matter of choice

In other words, the FWICE thing has weight and influence in the industry, but individual producers and banners can still choose how they want to proceed. Johar also points out that the timing of this controversy is such that Ranveer Singh may not suffer any immediate professional loss. He says, “We don’t know exactly what his shooting schedule is right now, because I believe he was on a break after ‘Dhurandhar’, and he was supposed to start another film in a few months.”

According to him, this gap gives both parties enough time to negotiate before any major production disruption occurs. Johar adds, “I am sure that by the time his next film goes on the floors, some solution will have been found.”

The producer also believes that while on one hand the producer side is talking about the loss of money, on the other hand it is equally important to listen to the actor’s side before drawing any conclusion. “If Ranveer Singh is holding back at a particular stage, he must have a reason,” says Johar, adding, “We have to listen to both sides. We can’t take a decision just by listening to one side.”

Ranveer refuses to discuss this matter with FWICE

Perhaps this explains Ranveer Singh’s insistence that FWICE was “not the right forum” to discuss the matter. Johar believes that the actor’s team is probably choosing to respond legally rather than publicly. He explains, “The producers are speaking in legal language, so perhaps Ranveer Singh is saying that since this is a legal matter, he too has the right to respond through his legal team.”

Beyond the legal arguments, Johar believes the controversy also shows that while contracts and legal paperwork are now becoming commonplace, how much Bollywood still relies on informal relationships and interactions. He is confident that the final outcome of this case will not be a punishment, but a settlement. “There is no other way than mutual understanding, because no one wants to waste time and energy on unnecessary legal processes, and we are a creative industry,” he says.

Can Ranveer come back in ‘Don 3’?

Interestingly, Johar also does not rule out the possibility that Ranveer Singh may eventually return in ‘Don 3’. He says, “It’s a possibility. Why not?” He further adds, “It is said in the film industry that there are no permanent enemies here. With the passage of time, everyone forgets their old grievances and moves on.”

According to FWICE, Excel Entertainment had contacted the organization earlier this year. They claimed that Ranveer had signed a three-film deal with the banner before leaving the project just before production began. The federation strongly criticized the actors’ decision to leave the project at the last minute. He said that such decisions deteriorate the “working ecology” of the industry and have an economic impact on many departments related to the film.

FWICE chief advisor Ashok Pandit described the matter as “very serious”. He warned that actors backing out just before shooting begins sets a dangerous precedent for the industry.

Along with this, the federation also said that they are ready to resolve the issue through dialogue.

Ranveer Singh’s statement on this matter

Meanwhile, Ranveer Singh broke his silence by issuing an official statement. However, he carefully avoided responding to those allegations directly.

His spokesperson said, “Ranveer Singh has the utmost respect for the film industry and everyone associated with the ‘Don’ franchise. During the recent developments related to ‘Don 3’, he has deliberately decided to maintain silence. He believes that professional conversations and personal relationships are best handled with dignity, understanding and mutual respect.”

The actor further stressed that he will not be discussing the issue publicly and wished the franchise every success in the future.

The statement further said, “Although various rumors and speculations have surfaced from time to time, Ranveer has never felt it necessary to respond publicly or indulge in these speculations. He is completely focused on his work and his future responsibilities.”

What went wrong between Ranveer and Farhan?

When Ranveer Singh was announced as the new Don in 2023—a role previously played by the likes of Amitabh Bachchan and Shah Rukh Khan—fans were filled with a mix of emotions: they were curious, divided, and excited. A very stylish announcement video created a huge stir online, and it looks like the iconic franchise is all set for a new chapter.

Initially, there were rumors that the project might have been affected by Ranveer Singh’s tough times at the box office. But after the success of the Dhurandhar series, reports claimed that the real issue was creative differences between the actor and Excel Entertainment.

According to several reports, Ranveer was unhappy with the repeated delays in production and the script not being finalized. It was also claimed that he wanted a darker, more aggressive version of ‘Don’, with more extreme action and a more serious tone; Whereas Farhan reportedly wanted to stay closer to the style and world established in the previous films.

Things reportedly worsened when Ranveer learned that the makers, despite his being associated with the film, were looking for other casting options. Soon after, the news of his leaving the film became official.

What initially seemed like a professional disagreement soon turned into something much bigger.

Industry reports later claimed that Excel Entertainment demanded damages of around Rs 40-45 crore from the actor citing financial losses incurred during pre-production. The matter reportedly reached the Producers Guild of India for arbitration, and eventually went to the Federation of Western India Cine Employees (FWICE).

Currently, ‘Don 3’ is in limbo after years of delays, casting changes and speculations. But beyond just the future of a franchise, the Ranveer Singh controversy has become a mirror of a larger reality of the industry – where public “bans” grab headlines first, while conversations behind closed doors often decide what happens next.
