The legal path seems to be cleared for Tamil superstar Thalapathy Vijay’s much-awaited film ‘Jana Nayakan’. Madras High Court has allowed the producers of the film to withdraw their months-old case filed against the ‘Central Board of Film Certification’ (CBFC). After this decision, now the legal hurdles for the release of the film have ended. Now, the makers are waiting for the decision of the revising committee on giving U, U/A or A certificate to the film.
On February 9, the producers filed an application to withdraw the writ petition against the CBFC. They submitted a letter to the Madras High Court Registry demanding withdrawal of the case as they have opted to send the film to the revising committee instead of continuing the legal battle.

Vijay’s farewell film ‘Jana Nayakan’ was scheduled to release in theaters on January 9. But, the film’s release was postponed indefinitely after the producers went to the Madras High Court over non-issue of the censor certificate. Initially, Justice PT Asha ordered the CBFC to issue a U/A 16+ certificate to the film.
During the hearing, the Censor Board’s counsel referred to an internal complaint by a board member that the film contained some dialogues that could hurt religious sentiments. The complainant also said that there was no defense expert in the investigation committee that looked after the military related symbols in the film, which is against the law.
Following the complaint, the CBFC chairperson withheld the certificate and suggested sending the film to a revising committee.

CBFC appealed against the single judge’s order and sought an interim stay. The Jan Nayakan team then approached the Supreme Court, which refused to intervene and sent the case back to the Madras High Court. On January 27, the division bench heard the case, set aside the single bench order and directed a fresh hearing. He also allowed the producers to make changes to the petition. However, the Jan Nayakan team decided to end the legal battle and instead take the revising committee route.
Jana Nayakan, directed by H Vinoth, is being marketed as Vijay’s farewell film. The film also stars Pooja Hegde, Bobby Deol, Mamita Baiju, Gautham Menon, Prakash Raj and Priyamani.
According to reports, the makers of Jan Nayakan are targeting a February release. It is being speculated that the producers will announce the release date of the film only after it is certified.
