A pillar of the Bengali film industry and theater world, Tamal Roy Chowdhury is no more. He died of a heart attack (cardiac arrest) during his sleep at his residence in South Kolkata on Monday, 9 March 2026. He was 80 years old and had been suffering from age-related ailments for some time. At 4 pm on Monday evening, his mortal remains were brought to Technicians Studio in Kolkata, where film personalities and his fans paid their last respects. After this his last rites were performed at Keoratala crematorium.

Tamal Roy Chowdhury was suffering from chronic illness for some time. In recent years, health problems have forced him to slow down and reduce his work. On March 9, he died in his sleep following a cardiac arrest. The actor’s mortal remains were brought to Kolkata’s Technician Studio at 4 pm on Monday to pay homage. His last rites were performed at Keoratala crematorium.

Well-known character actor of Bengali film industry, Tamal Roy Chowdhury started his journey from theatre. The stage remained close to him throughout his life, even as his work expanded into television and cinema. Since the mid-1990s, he became a well-known personality in many Bengali television serials. Audiences often saw him in strong supporting roles which quietly became a memorable part of the stories.
Over the years, he also appeared in a number of Bengali films, ranging from mainstream commercial projects to more alternative, critically driven cinema. Popular films in which he worked include The Namesake, Challenge, Le Halua Le, Bindass, Amazon Obhijaan and Chandar Pahar. He was also a part of famous films like Jaatiswar and Gorosthane Sabdhaan.

Actor and politician Debadut Ghosh fondly remembered Roy Chowdhury in a social media post. “He was a very nice and friendly person who loved to have long conversations without worrying about time,” Ghosh said.
He loved the juniors very much and whenever anyone faced any difficulty during work, he would come forward to help.”
Tamal Roy Chowdhury was last seen in director Tathagata Mukherjee’s film Bhatavati. He also ran his own theater group, Calcutta Performing Arts, and worked with many major directors of the Bengali film industry.
