The mythological stories of the Trojan War and Ancient Greece have been brought to the big screen many times in Hollywood. Some films are directly based on this historical war, while some show the deep impact it has on the lives of the characters after the war. At the same time, there are some films which, despite not being directly about Troy, take you on a tour of the same heroic and grand world of ancient Greece. If you have seen the recently released ‘The Odyssey’ and you feel like watching films with sword wars, great empires and historical sagas, then you should definitely include these 5 films in your watchlist.

1. The Odyssey (2026)

Where to watch: In theaters

This new film directed by Christopher Nolan is a topic of discussion everywhere these days. It is the action-packed story of Odysseus, King of Ithaca, whose journey home from the Trojan War turns into a deadly fight for his life. Along the way they encounter mythical creatures, powerful gods, and extremely difficult situations. Starring a stellar cast including Anne Hathaway, Tom Holland, Zendaya and Robert Pattinson, the film is the grandest screen adaptation of Homer’s epic yet.

2. The Return (2024)

Where to watch: Amazon Prime Video

Not every story of Odysseus revolves only around war and action. ‘The Return’ presents a very different and serious perspective. The film stars Ralph Fiennes as an aging Odysseus, who finally returns to Ithaca after two decades. But their home is no longer the same as they had left. Juliette Binoche plays Penelope, who has been rejecting unwanted marriage proposals for years and is unwilling to accept that her husband is no longer in this world. This film touches human emotions deeply.

3. Troy (2004)

Where to watch: Amazon Prime Video

For cinema lovers, ‘Troy’ is one of the best and memorable Hollywood films made on the Trojan War. Brad Pitt brought the character of Achilles to life in this film, while the characters of Eric Bana (Hector) and Orlando Bloom (Paris) breathed life into the film. This ten-year war, which began because Paris brought Helen to Troy, still thrills audiences today. Even two decades after its release, its war sequences look amazing.

4. 300 (2006)

Where to watch: Netflix and JioHotstar

Technically, the Trojan War is not shown in ‘300’. The film is actually based on the historical Battle of Thermopylae, where King Leonidas and his 300 Spartan warriors take on the army of the vast Persian Empire. Despite this, fans of ‘The Odyssey’ love this film because it has the same grandeur, extraordinary hero and the same special depiction of ancient Greece.

5. Helen of Troy (1956)

Where to watch: Amazon Prime Video

Long before the age of modern visual effects (VFX), this classic film brought the famous story of the Trojan War to the big screen. The film mainly focuses on the love affair between Prince Paris and Queen Helen of Sparta, which later becomes the biggest reason for the destruction of Troy and the Great War. This is a must-watch film for lovers of old cinema.
