Bollywood’s Mr. Perfectionist Aamir Khan has made a big and shocking revelation about the most talked about character ‘Rancho’ (Phunsuk Wangdu) of his blockbuster film ‘3 Idiots’ (2009). For years, it has been believed among the audience and media that the character of Rancho was inspired by Sonam Wangchuk, a famous educationist and activist from Ladakh. Now Aamir Khan has given complete clarification on this and termed it as just a misunderstanding.

Aamir’s statement at London Indian Film Festival

Aamir Khan said this during the closing ceremony of London Indian Film Festival (LIFF). In this festival, a special screening of Aamir’s iconic film ‘Lagaan’ was organized to commemorate the completion of 25 years. During the interaction with the audience after the screening of the film, when Aamir was asked a question on the connection between Sonam Wangchuk and Rancho, he presented his views with facts.

Aamir Khan said, “No, actually this is not true. This is a complete misunderstanding. When we were making ‘3 Idiots’, I was not aware of Mr. Sonam Wangchuk. Neither of me nor the two writers of the film—Rajkumar Hirani and Abhijat Joshi—were aware of him. I wanted to make this clear on the basis of actual facts.”

Claim of ‘Chatur’ (Omi Vaidya) declared wrong

Actually, this discussion started again when actor Omi Vaidya, who played the character of ‘Chatur Ramalingam’ in ‘3 Idiots’, shared a video on social media. Omi had claimed that the character of Phunsuk Wangdu is actually based on Sonam Wangchuk.

Referring to this video of Omi, Aamir said, “I recently saw a video of ‘Chatur’ (Omi Vaidya) in which he had made such a claim. But he is wrong. Maybe Chatur was thinking like this, but it was not so from our side. The work that Mr. Sonam is doing is amazing. To respect his work, it is not necessary that his character is related to ‘3 Idiots’.”
