Famous Hollywood actor Eric Dane, who is fondly known by fans as ‘Dr.’ of ‘Grey’s Anatomy’. Mark Sloan’ or ‘McSteamy’, has died at the age of 53. Eric was battling a serious neurodegenerative disease called ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis) for a long time.
That unfulfilled dream of 2025 Emmy reunion
The news of Eric Dane’s death reminded his fans of that emotional moment.
The actor once explained why he couldn’t attend the 2025 Emmys, where he was scheduled to give a special tribute to Grey’s Anatomy’s 20th anniversary with co-star Jesse Williams. This moment meant a lot to him personally, given his long association with the show and its cast.
Following his amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) diagnosis, which he announced in April, Dane later explained that he was unable to attend the reunion due to his health issues. It was a difficult time, and it was not by his will. “ALS is a terrible disease… so I was in the hospital during the Emmys and I was getting stitches in my head,” Dane told The Washington Post in an interview.
The actor admitted that he was very disappointed to miss the tribute. He said, “I missed an opportunity that I was really looking forward to. It would have been great to see Jesse and see some of my teammates again, and to be able to present to my colleagues, which I thought would have been a special moment… So I was really upset about that, but you know, there was nothing I could do about it.”
Eric Dane was best known for his role as Dr. Mark Sloan, or McSteamy, on Grey’s Anatomy, where he appeared from season two to season nine. He joined the show in 2006 and remained a part of it till 2012. Although he initially appeared in a side role, the popularity of his character forced the makers to introduce him as one of the lead actors.
In addition to Grey’s Anatomy, Dane created a new generation of fans with his role as Cal Jacobs on HBO’s Euphoria. Continuing his legacy in the medical drama, he returned as a special guest in the season 17 episode “Breathe.”
In addition to acting, Dane has partnered with the I AM ALS organization to support and aid research for neurodegenerative diseases. He was also scheduled to appear in Into the Beautiful and Family Secrets.
