Kamal Haasan has played an important role in shaping modern Indian cinema. He is one of the best actors in the country. He is also credited with bringing many new and advanced technologies to Indian cinema and taking this art forward. Kamal has made a place in the hearts of the audience across the country and the world by giving many blockbuster films in his career so far. He has many such low budget films which have earned huge sums at the box office. One of these was Pushpak which cost only Rs 15 lakh but it made the makers rich.
Miracle of ‘Pushpak Viman’
There were no dialogues in Kamal Haasan’s black comedy film ‘Pushpak Viman’, released in 1987. In this way, it was the first silent film made several decades after the era of silent films ended. This film is the story of an unemployed youth who gets trapped in a big web of difficulties. In this, Kamal Haasan played the lead role and along with him many actors like Amala Akkineni, Sameer Khakhar, Tinu Anand, KS Ramesh, Farida Jalal, Pratap Pothen, Loknath and PL Narayan also played important roles.

Interestingly, it was released under different names in different states according to the official languages there. According to the report of ‘The Hindu’, it was released in Tamil Nadu as ‘Pesum Padam’, while in Hindi speaking areas this black comedy was released as ‘Pushpak’, in Karnataka as ‘Pushpak Vimanam’, in erstwhile Andhra Pradesh as ‘Pushpak Vimanam’ and in Kerala as ‘Pushpak Vimanam’.
The film with a budget of Rs 15 lakh had earned 6 times more.
During a recent event, Kamal Haasan himself told that the film was made on a budget of Rs 15 lakh. It was jointly produced by Shringaar Nagaraj and Singeetham Srinivas Rao. This film was quite experimental with no dialogues, yet ‘Pushpak Viman’ was a huge hit and earned six times more than its budget. According to a 1989 ‘India Today’ report, this black comedy film had earned around Rs 1 crore at that time.
