Delhi High Court has issued a very important interim order protecting the personality rights of famous Telugu cinema actor Akkineni Naga Chaitanya. The court has directed to immediately stop the obscene material being circulated on the internet without the consent of the actor and those objectionable AI-generated images and videos in which he is depicted in inappropriate situations. The single bench of Justice Jyoti Singh, hearing the case, has completely banned third parties from commercially using the actor’s name, image or voice and selling merchandise related to them without his permission. Along with this, online platforms have been ordered to remove all such objectionable content.

Naga Chaitanya’s lawyer said that many websites are circulating obscene video content using the actor’s name as a category or tag, causing irreparable damage to his reputation. He said that some parties are selling merchandise bearing the actor’s photo, and YouTube videos and channels are circulating defamatory, AI-generated and other unauthorized content in violation of Chaitanya’s personality and publicity rights.

The judge, in an interim order dated May 29, said Naga Chaitanya is undoubtedly a renowned actor of the Indian film industry and has the right to protect himself from unauthorized use of his name, image and voice by third parties. “Such distasteful and objectionable content is causing serious damage to the reputation of the plaintiff (actor), and may send a wrong message to the public that whatever is being shown is true,” the court said.

There is also a need to protect the plaintiff’s right to prevent third parties from infringing on his rights and taking advantage of his name to sell goods.” Several celebrities like Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Abhishek Bachchan and Salman Khan, Art of Living founder Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, journalist Sudhir Chaudhary and podcaster Raj Shamani had also earlier moved the high court to protect their privacy and publicity rights.

The High Court had granted him interim relief. Recently, the High Court had also protected the personality rights of senior leader Shashi Tharoor, cricketer Gautam Gambhir and Bollywood actors Sonakshi Sinha, Vivek Oberoi, Arun Kapoor, Varun Dhawan and Allu Arjun by granting interim relief.
