There is a very sad news for Hollywood and cinema lovers. Marcia Lucas, the Oscar-winning editor who edited classic films like ‘Star Wars’, has passed away at the age of 80. She was one of the few influential women editors who played an important role in changing the definition of cinema in the era of ‘New Hollywood’. According to the official statement released by the family’s attorney Deidre Von Rock, Marcia Lucas was suffering from Metastatic Cancer. He breathed his last at his home in Rancho Mirage, California. His family and close people were with him in the last moments of his life.

The creative force behind ‘Star Wars’
Marcia Lucas also edited the 1983 film ‘Return of the Jedi’ as well as George Lucas’s early films before ‘Star Wars’—’THX 1138’ and ‘American Graffiti’. He also worked on several films directed by renowned filmmaker Martin Scorsese during the 1970s, including ‘Taxi Driver’, ‘Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore’ and ‘New York, New York’.
One of the most influential female editors in Hollywood
Editing was one of the few senior creative positions where women were able to hold their own in Hollywood. Marcia Lucas was part of a generation of female editors whose work helped shape the thinking of predominantly male filmmakers in the ‘New Hollywood’ era that lasted from the late 1960s to the early 1980s.

Her contemporaries included Dede Allen, editor of ‘Bonnie & Clyde’ and ‘Dog Day Afternoon’; ‘Paper Moon’ and ‘Jaws’ editor Verna Fields; and Thelma Schoonmaker, who has edited most of Scorsese’s films since ‘Raging Bull’.
The unnamed heroine of ‘Star Wars’
Marcia Lucas is often considered the unsung heroine of ‘Star Wars’—the film that later became widely known by its subtitle, ‘A New Hope’. She convinced her then-husband, George Lucas, that Obi-Wan Kenobi, played by Alec Guinness, should die during a battle with Darth Vader, and then returned as a guiding spirit for Luke Skywalker, played by Mark Hamill. “It was extremely difficult because we had 40,000 feet of dialogue footage of pilots talking, and he had to look at it all, cut it down, and put the fight scenes in,” said George Lucas in an interview with Rolling Stone shortly after the film’s release. “No one had done this before to weave a real story into a dogfight, and that’s what we were trying to do.”
Early life and career
Marcia Lucas was born Marcia Griffin in Modesto, California, shortly after World War II. After her parents’ divorce, she moved to Los Angeles with her mother during her childhood.
She started her career as a film librarian, after which she started editing commercial and promotional films. As an assistant editor, she worked on the film ‘Journey to the Pacific’ directed by Verna Fields. During this time he met George Lucas, who was then a film student at the University of Southern California. Shortly after this both of them got engaged.

Marcia and George Lucas’s marriage ended in 1982. However, they decided not to make their separation public until the release of the film ‘Return of the Jedi’ in 1983. She later married Tom Rodriguez, who worked as a production manager at Skywalker Ranch, and the couple lived together from 1983 to 1993.
Marcia Lucas is survived by her daughters Amanda Lucas and Amy Soper, as well as three grandchildren, Felix Haliken, Eliana Haliken, and Knox Soper.

“His impact on films will never be forgotten, but those who loved him most will always remember how he filled their lives with joy, beauty, color and love,” the family said in a statement.
The statement added: “His talent as an editor was reflected in his emotional intelligence, rhythm and humanity. He had an uncanny knack for recognizing the truth of any moment and giving it heart, energy and clarity on screen.”
