Born in Lahore on 16 January 1926 in Lahore, OP Nayyar started his career with the film Aashman. He is considered one of the most rhythmic and melodious music directors in the Hindi film industry. She got recognition from Gurudutt’s films, Mr. and Mrs. 55, CID and Tum Sa Nahi Dakh. OP Nayyar was the first musician of his time who has given such a melodious music without using Lata Mangeshkar’s voice.
He won the Filmfare Award for Best Music Director in 1958 for a new round. Nayar Saheb worked extensively with Geeta Dutt, Asha Bhosle, Mohammad Rafi, although not with Bollywood’s leading female singer Lata Mangeshkar. He had already identified Kishore Kumar as his popular singer. Film like Bap Re Bap (1955) is one of Kishore Kumar’s special “OP” style hit films as well as the film Ragini (1958) but the relationship did not last long.
OP Nayyar met another great singer Asha Bhosle. If someone can be given the credit for making Asha Tai as Asha Bhosle, then it was OP Nayyar. He took full advantage of Asha’s voice range. Nayyar Saheb and Asha Bhosle became very close while working together in many films, but the same love affair also became the cause of Nayyar Saheb’s ruin. Music historian Raju Bharatan has written about the love affair of both in his book ‘A Journey Down Memory Lane’, OP Nayyar’s love affair with Asha Bhosle lasted for 14 years.
Asha Bhosle, who once wandered in OP Nayyar’s Class Car, decided to end this musical chapter of her life in 1972. After this, Asha Bhosle and OP Nayyar never stepped under one roof.
