Noted lyricist and writer Prasoon Joshi has been appointed chairman of India’s public service broadcaster Prasar Bharati, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting announced on Saturday. Announcing the appointment, the ministry underlined Joshi’s wide-ranging contributions to the fields of literature, advertising, cinema and public communication. The appointment comes months after the ministry accepted the resignation of former chairman Navneet Kumar Sehgal.

Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnav congratulated Joshi on his appointment and said that he is an outstanding creative personality. Vaishnav further said that under his leadership, Prasar Bharati will get new energy, deeper purpose and a new creative voice. In a press release issued on Joshi’s appointment, the ministry said he has played a significant role in shaping contemporary Indian media discourse and is known for his influential writing and deep cultural sensitivity.
It said his works include acclaimed film songs, advertising campaigns and socially relevant stories that connect with diverse audiences across the country. Joshi has also been the Chairman of the Mumbai-based Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) since August 2017. The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting said that he strengthened the film certification processes during his tenure and also actively engaged with all stakeholders of the film industry.
His tenure at the CBFC reflects a balanced approach towards creative expression and regulatory accountability, the ministry statement said. Prior to this, Joshi was also the Chief Executive Officer of McCann World Group India and Chairman of McCann World Group Asia Pacific (a subsidiary of McCann Ericsson).
