Bollywood’s ‘Nawab’ i.e. Saif Ali Khan is known for his outspokenness and seriousness. Recently, he has openly expressed his views on the ever increasing paparazzi culture in Bollywood and the increasing interference in the personal lives of celebrities. Saif believes that the 24-hour surveillance of cameras has largely destroyed the ‘glamour and mystique’ surrounding film stars, which was once the main USP of stardom.

“If you say something against paparazzi, people think you are spoiled”
In an interview with senior journalist Barkha Dutt, Saif Ali Khan shared his sweet and complicated relationship with the paparazzi. He admitted that people often make wrong assumptions about him when he raises his voice against this culture. Saif said: “This is a very strange relationship. Some people even pay money to call the paparazzi themselves, which really surprises me. In today’s time you never know who is a real journalist in the media’s guise and who is not. The biggest problem is that even if you (celebrity) say something for your privacy, people start looking at you as spoiled. So it is very difficult to say anything bad about it. Goes.”
Explaining why he feels that increased media attention affects stardom, Saif said that paparazzi have brought celebrities closer to the people but have also taken away the glamor that used to surround them. He further said that the real purpose of paparazzi photography is often to capture people in moments that they want to keep private.
“I think it kind of devalues the film stars. But at the same time, it brings them into your living room. In India, there’s not been a real paparazzi culture yet. Their best picture is the one where you’re doing something that you don’t want anyone to see, right? Like, sitting on a toilet seat or something. That would be a good pap picture where you’ve seen a film star without all their glamour,” Khan continued, “That’s why Americans and English people don’t like paparazzi because it brings out the truth. I think it dilutes stardom a lot. And I think my life was fine without them.”
