Two of the biggest megastars of Indian cinema—superstar Rajinikanth and master actor-producer Kamal Haasan—have come together once again for an explosive project. The official name of Rajinikanth’s much-awaited upcoming film, which was till now called ‘Thalaivar 173’, has been announced. The film has been named ‘Dharman’.Producer Kamal Haasan released the first poster of the film on social media on Wednesday, June 24, 2026, which has taken the internet by storm as soon as it arrived.The announcement of the film, directed by Ashwath Marimuthu, known for films like ‘Dragon’ and ‘Ori Devuda’, has created a lot of buzz on social media and the audience is curious to know more about the project.
Rajinikanth’s ‘Thalaivar 173’ is now ‘Dharman’, poster released
In the first poster, Rajinikanth is seen wearing blue surgical scrubs in a serious manner, which suggests that the story of the film is related to medical or hospital. In this, the title of the film is ‘Dharman’ and below it the tagline “The Deadly Doctor” is also written. Kamal Haasan wrote a caption in Tamil, which roughly means “Justice will prevail.”
What did Rajinikanth say about choosing director Ashwath Marimuthu for ‘Dharman’?
During the puja ceremony, Rajinikanth revealed that Ashwath Marimuthu was the fourth director to join the project. He admitted that many changes took place behind the scenes in this film. He said, “The project was initially supposed to be directed by K.S. Ravikumar. But things didn’t work out, and then Sundar C. came on board as the director. However, he had to leave the project because of his other films. Then Sibi Chakraborty came along; I loved Sibi’s story, but it was a very sensitive subject. It was about a nuclear scientist and required shooting in Afghanistan and Russia. Also, it seemed like a very time-consuming project.” So we couldn’t do it. Then we finalized Ashwath Marimuthu.”

This film was produced by Kamal Haasan and R. Mahendran has produced under the banner of Raj Kamal Films International (RKFI). The music of the film is composed by Anirudh Ravichander, who has previously worked with Rajinikanth in films like ‘Coolie’, ‘Jailor’, ‘Darbar’ and ‘Petta’. Cinematography is by Niket Bommi and editing is by Pradeep E. Raghav.
