Today even at the age of 63, Nitish is alone. His first marriage was to Monisha Patil in 1991 and they divorced in 2005. While the actor married IAS officer Smita Gate in 2009, their relationship broke up in 2019.

Serious allegations were made against Smita

In 2019, Nitish had filed a complaint against Smita. A report claimed that Nitish Bhardwaj had written a mail to Bhopal Police Commissioner Harinarayanachari Mishra. In it, he had written about his ex-wife Smita that Smita is mentally torturing him and is not even allowing him to meet her twin daughters. The actor had also filed a divorce petition in the family court of Mumbai.

In an interview given to Bombay Times, the actor had said that divorce is more dangerous than death and said, ‘All I can say is that sometimes divorce can be more painful than death.
