The Revenue Intelligence Directorate (DRI) has achieved a major success and arrested a prominent player Sahil Jain in the high-profile Ranya Rao Sona smuggling case. Jain is the third accused in this case (A3) and is being described as a “big grip” in the smuggling network.
The Revenue Intelligence Directorate (DRI) on Tuesday claimed that Sandalwood actress Ranya Rao, who was caught while smuggling gold at the Kemp Gowda International Airport, had allegedly raised funds through hawala channels to buy smuggling goods. According to DRI, Jain helped in smuggling 14.568 kg gold brought by actress Ranya Rao on January 11, 2025. The price of seized gold is Rs 11,55,97,000, causing a customs deficit of about Rs 4,46,61,919.

The investigation shows that Jain had also helped Ranya Rao twice in setting up the smuggled gold. The DRI has also got a clue that Jain was preparing to hide 14.2 kg of gold seized from Ranya on March 3. Sahil Jain has been sent to DRI custody till Saturday. Ranya Rao was arrested on March 3 after a thorough search at Bangalore Airport, which found that her waist and calves were tied with bandage and tissue gold rods.

In addition, additional gold rods and chopped pieces were also found in his shoes and front pockets. The recovered gold was 24 carats and weighs 14.2 kg, which costs more than Rs 12.56 crore. Rao has been charged under the Customs Act and the Prevention of Smuggling Act. The protocol officer who assisted the actor told the investigating officials that he had done so under the special instructions of DGP Ramchandra Rao. Ranya’s half -father Ramchandra Rao was recently sent on a compulsory holiday amid a huge uproar in the gold smuggling case.
The actress allegedly traveled to Dubai 27 times alone in 2025, in which 25 trips to bring gold for sale in India. DRI is checking the source of money for the purchase and travel tickets for Ranya Rao and his colleague, alleging that the money was transferred through hawala routes. The agency is also investigating the last buyers of smuggled gold in India.
