Gauhar Khan gave 5 auditions for Slumdog Millionaire
The actress once shared an interesting anecdote related to her journey in the film industry. In an interview with Film Companion, she revealed that she did not get a role in a big international project only because the makers felt she was ‘too beautiful’ for that role.
That project was none other than the Oscar winning film ‘Slumdog Millionaire’. Directed by Danny Boyle, this film achieved tremendous success worldwide. Gauahar Khan had told that she had cleared five rounds of auditions and Danny Boyle was quite impressed with her acting. However, the director felt that his look did not fit the rough and realistic story of the film, due to which he could not get the role.

Gauhar Khan had said, ‘One of the biggest projects of my life was lost just because I looked too beautiful for it and that film was ‘Slumdog Millionaire’. I met Danny Boyle and also gave five rounds of auditions for the film. After the fifth round he said to me, ‘You are a brilliant actor, have you really taken training in India?’ At that time I did not have much experience and I told him, ‘Yes, I have taken training in India only.’
The director had clearly refused
Gauhar Khan further said, ‘He told me, you talk like an actor who has taken training from outside India. How do you have so much experience?’ To this I said, ‘Sir, I don’t know, I just try to do better every day.’ Then Danny Boyle said, ‘You are a wonderful actor, but I will not be able to cast you in this film because I have to match three different age groups and your face does not fit in a film like ‘Slumdog Millionaire’.’

Gauhar Khan told that she had a similar experience during the shooting of ‘Rocket Singh: Salesman of the Year’. For her character, the director had specifically asked her to do more ‘strange’ make-up, because her role in the film was of a girl who did not have to look very glamorous or beautiful.
