The results of the West Bengal Assembly elections 2026 have ousted the 15-year-old Trinamool Congress (TMC) rule in the state, but Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s refusal to step down has sparked a fresh constitutional crisis and controversy. Filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma (RGV), famous for his outspoken opinion on this entire incident, has given a sharp reaction.The results of these elections were declared on Monday. BJP won 207 seats, much more than the majority mark of 148 seats, while TMC, which was in power for the last 15 years, was reduced to 80 seats.
Banerjee refused to accept these results and accused the BJP and the Election Commission of “robbing” the democratic process. He insisted that his party had actually emerged morally victorious. Responding to his comments, Verma said that democracy means institutions and attacking them is actually attacking democracy itself.

Addressing the media on Tuesday, Banerjee said, “I will not resign. I have not lost. I will not go to Raj Bhavan… There is no question of that. We have not lost the elections. They can defeat us officially through the Election Commission, but morally we have won the elections,” she asserted.

He also alleged that he was “pushed and kicked in the stomach” during the counting of votes. He claimed that CCTV cameras were deliberately switched off, while his agents were assaulted.
Banerjee further said, “My aim is very clear. I will strengthen Team INDIA, just like a common man. Now I do not have any post, so I am a common citizen. So, you cannot tell me that I am using your position. Now I am a free bird. I have spent my whole life in the service of the people, even in these 15 years I have not taken even a single penny of pension. I do not even take a single penny of salary. Not taking it. But now, I am a free bird. So, I have some work to do, which I will definitely do.”

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday praised the BJP’s performance in the West Bengal Assembly elections. These results led to a major political change in the state, although Banerjee disagreed with the decision and refused to resign.
