Filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma (RGV), known for his outspoken statements, has made a big prediction regarding the upcoming Bollywood film ‘Dhurandhar 2: The Revenge’. Verma believes that this Ranveer Singh starrer film can completely change the current equations of the Indian film industry and challenge the dominance of South Indian films.

The magical figure of Rs 2000 crore and the dominance of the South

In a recent conversation with ‘Variety India’, RGV said that if ‘Dhurandhar 2’ does a business of Rs 1500-2000 crore at the box office, it will prove to be a trendsetter. Varma said: “If Dhurandhar 2 makes figures like Rs 1500-2000 crore, all South films will be left behind. Many South Indian action films are still based on the ‘old school’ style of storytelling and old slapstick.” This sequel comes after the blockbuster success of Dhurandhar, which had earned around Rs 1300 crore worldwide after its release in December last year.

Why does RGV feel that Dhurandhar 2 can perform even better?

According to Varma, the biggest advantage of the sequel is the audience’s existing connection with its characters and story. Directed by Aditya Dhar, the spy thriller follows Singh’s character Hamza — also known as Jaskirat — an Indian operative working in Pakistan.

Varma told Variety India that the emotional investment the audience already has in the story could help the sequel perform better than the first film. He said, “The audience is very invested in the characters and the story. I think they will follow the trajectory from Part One onwards.”

He also revealed that both parts were shot simultaneously, meaning the story flows like “dividing a film into two parts”, drawing comparisons to the storytelling approach of Baahubali.

What makes the action different in Dhurandhar? Varma also emphasized the film’s style of action choreography, describing it as more grounded than the exaggerated style often seen in commercial cinema.

“You can’t just show people flying in the air and kicking. It has to be real,” he said, crediting the franchise with pushing Bollywood towards more realistic action sequences. The recently released trailer also impressed the filmmaker, who took to social media to praise Dhar and described the scale of the film as “huge”.

When will the film be released and with whom will it clash?

Actually, this film was going to clash with Yash starrer Toxic: The Fairytale for Grown-ups, but later this clash was averted at the box office after its release was shifted to June. However, Dhurandhar 2 will still have to compete with Pawan Kalyan starrer Ustad Bhagat Singh, which is releasing on the same date. The film also stars R Madhavan, Arjun Rampal, Sanjay Dutt, Rakesh Bedi and Sara Arjun. With huge promotions, the industry’s focus is on whether the sequel will be able to match or surpass the tremendous success of its previous film.
