The year 2026 has started with a shock for the Indian music world. Bollywood’s most favorite singer Arijit Singh has announced his retirement from playback singing (singing for films). The 38-year-old singer, who has ruled millions of hearts with his soulful voice, shared an emotional post on social media and clarified that he will not sign any new film project now.

The famous singer shared an emotional note with his fans on his Instagram handle. He wrote, “Hello everyone, Happy New Year. I want to thank you all for showering so much love as listeners over the years. I am happy to share that from now on I will not be taking any new assignments as a playback singer. I am ending it. It was a wonderful journey.”

Listeners across the country are surprised by this announcement. One user commented, “Tell me the account has been hacked,” while another wrote, “Bollywood music is incomplete without him.”
Arijit Singh has given some of the most heart-touching songs of Bollywood, with ‘Tum Hi Ho’ from Aashiqui 2 being his breakthrough hit. Her other favorite songs include ‘Channa Mereya’ from Ae Dil Hai Mushkil, ‘Phir Bhi Tumko Chahunga’ from Half Girlfriend and ‘Hawaayen’ from Jab Harry Met Sejal. He has won two National Film Awards and was awarded the Padma Shri in 2025.

Singh’s most recent playback song is ‘Mathrubhoomi’ from the film Battle of Galwan. Details about his upcoming independent projects have not been revealed yet, but he has confirmed that he will continue performing live and focus on other work besides playback.

Arijit Singh has not cited any controversy as the reason behind this decision, but his creative satisfaction and personal growth. He explained that he was feeling a bit ‘bored’ with this routine and now wanted to learn something new.

Arijit now wants to focus on his own independent albums and music, where he gets the freedom to work without the script or pressure of a film.He has expressed his desire to return to his roots i.e. Indian classical music and learn again as a ‘small artist’.Arijit believes that his departure will give space to new and emerging singers to make their mark in the industry.
Will Arijit’s voice never be heard again?
It is a matter of relief for the fans that Arijit has not completely broken his connection with music.He has said that he has some old projects and songs left which he will complete. Therefore, some of his film songs will still be released in the year 2026.
He clarified, “I’m not going to stop making music, I’m just going to stop singing for films.” He will remain active as a composer and producer.
