Birth and education
Arun Govil was born on 12 January 1958 in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh. Arun Govil also spent some of his childhood in Shahjahanpur. He took B.Sc degree from Agra University. Arun Govil’s father wanted him to do a government job and he also tried for it. But perhaps fate had something else in store. In the year 1975, Arun Govil came to Mumbai to join his brother and joined his business. But here too, due to lack of interest, Arun Govil started doing theatre.

After a lot of hard work and struggle, Arun Govil got his first film ‘Paheli’ in the year 1977. Then the actor worked in films like ‘Saanch Ko Aanch Nahi’ in the year 1979, ‘Sawan Ko Aane Do’ in the year 1979. But Arun Govil could not get any special recognition from these films. After that, in the year 1985, the actor auditioned for Ramanand Sagar’s serial ‘Vikram Aur Betal’. During this time he got the role of Vikram.

Let us tell you that actor Arun Govil got his real identity from Ramanand Sagar’s serial ‘Ramayana’. Arun Govil once told that Ramanand Sagar wanted to make Ramayan serial. Auditions were being held for its cast. When Arun Govil came to know, he approached Ramanand Sagar to ask for the role of Ram. But then Ramanand Sagar refused him saying that he would not be able to play the role of Ram.
Whereas even after searching a lot for Ramanand, no one was found for the role of Ram. Then he auditioned Arun Govil and he got selected for the role of Ram. With this role, Arun Govil’s fortunes changed and he got a different identity in every household. After the role of Shri Ram played by Arun Govil in this religious serial which came in the year 1987, people started considering him as God.
Arun Govil had told that when he was standing with a drink and cigarette at the success party of the serial Ramayana. Then someone came to him and said, God, what are you doing? Actor Arun Govil told that people had faith in him. Then he gave up cigarettes and alcohol after this incident.
