The most special thing about Ram is not what he does, but what he decides not to do. They give up power when they could have kept it. They put their duty above everything else, no matter how high a price they have to pay for it. Ram, popularly known as ‘Maryada Purushottam’, exemplifies dignity, restraint and moral clarity even in moments of loss, exile and injustice. This is the reason why this story remains equally relevant even today.
Ramayan: Nitish Tiwari, Ranbir Kapoor and Namit Malhotra talk about the film
Nitish Tiwari, director of Ramayana (which is a two-part film series), said, “The greatness of Ramayana lies in its emotional depth. In fact, it is not just a story of good and evil, but it is about our decisions, their consequences and the responsibility of doing the right thing. Ram’s journey is a very human one, and that is what we have tried to stay completely true to.” Talking about playing the character of Ram, Ranbir Kapoor said, “I don’t think I am here to represent Ram. I am here to learn from him. There is a simplicity and purity about him that is very rare; and trying to understand and internalize that has been a very humbling experience for me.”
Namit Malhotra, producer, film-maker and creative architect of Ramayan, said, “The real strength of Ram’s story lies not in what he conquered, but in what he sacrificed. He represents an ideal that is not easy, not convenient; but necessary. He chooses his duty above his desires, chooses truth above his comfort, and sacrifices above his self-interest. That is why his story It has been going on for thousands of years, and it has the same importance even today.”
