Amidst the ongoing rift between singer-rapper Honey Singh and Badshah, his controversial song ‘Volume 1’ has once again landed him in trouble. The Delhi High Court has directed Honey Singh and Badshah to immediately remove their song ‘Volume 1’, released in 2006-07, from all social media platforms. The Court found the song to be extremely obscene, blatantly objectionable and derogatory towards women, artistic values and social norms.

The court said that the lyrics of the song are not only objectionable, but are clearly written with the aim of normalizing the portrayal of women as objects of ridicule and sexual gratification. The court further said that allowing such content, including that of minors, to be circulated online under the guise of freedom of artistic expression cannot be justified. In a statement the court said this is one of those rare cases where the conscience of the court has been deeply hurt. This is one of those unfortunate examples where the court finds that the song is extremely obscene, blatantly objectionable and derogatory towards women, artistic values and social norms. The song’s lyrics are not only disrespectful or offensive, but are clearly written with the aim of normalizing the treatment of women as objects of ridicule and sexual gratification.

No civilized society can allow such content
The court observed that it is necessary to issue interim directions, as it is not acceptable to allow dissemination of such content on online platforms, including among minors, under the guise of freedom of artistic expression, the court said in its order. No civilized society can allow such content to remain freely available or monetize it. Defendants No. 4 (Spotify) and 5 (Honey Singh), and any other person claiming rights over the objectionable obscene song(s), are directed to immediately remove the URLs hosting such content from the social media platforms or any other online space. Both Badshah and Honey Singh started their career together as members of the rap group Mafia Munder, which also included Ikka, Lil Golu and Raftaar. The group gave many popular songs, like Khol Bot, Begani Naar Buri and Dilli Ke Deewane, etc. The band last performed in 2012. There was a dispute and public altercation between them, after which both separated and started accusing each other on social media.
