While the film ‘Dhurandhar: The Revenge’, directed by Aditya Dhar, is becoming a success at the box office, on the other hand it is embroiled in a serious controversy. The Sikh community has expressed strong objection to a scene in the film, after which actor R Madhavan has come forward and given clarification.
What is the whole controversy?
The crux of the controversy is the scene in the film in which R Madhavan’s character (Ajay Sanyal), while talking to Ranveer Singh’s character, recites the sacred quatrain of ‘Dasham Granth’ composed by Guru Gobind Singh Ji. It is alleged that during this period Madhavan has been shown smoking a cigarette.
Shiv Sena (Shinde faction) leader and president of ‘Sikhs in Maharashtra’ Gurjit Singh Kher has lodged a complaint in this regard at Mulund police station in Mumbai. He called this an insult to Gurbani, saying: “Gurbani is not just a dialogue—it is divine and sacred. To recite it while smoking a cigarette shows ignorance of our religious sensitivities.”
He further said, “There is a slight misunderstanding. I am sure, before this scene, before saying this line, Aditya Dhar ji – who takes care of all these things more than me – had told me that before saying this line, long before that, you will extinguish the cigarette. And no.” There will be no smoke coming out of your mouth, no smoke anywhere on the screen, no cigarette in your hand. Because it is very sacred for us. I’m pretty sure that before this scene, before I said this line, Aditya Dhar ji – who pays more attention to all these things than me – had already asked me to extinguish the cigarette. While expressing this line, there will be no smoke coming out of your mouth, no smoke on the screen, and no cigarette in your hand.)
R. Madhavan further said “So I extinguished the cigarette. And if you watch the scene, you won’t see smoke coming out of my mouth, nor any smoke in the frame, nor any sign of smoke anywhere until the scene is over. Because we know this, we don’t want to hurt anyone. We are with the entire Sikh community. And we respect them a lot. I go to the Golden Temple before the release of every film of mine, it’s Everyone knows. Believe us. (“So, I extinguished the cigarette properly. And if you watch that scene, you will not see any smoke coming out of my mouth, nor is there any trace of smoke till the end of that scene. Where did the ‘Dhurandhar 2’ controversy start?
According to a report in Moneycontrol, a formal complaint has been lodged by Gurjit Singh Kher at the Mulund Police Station in Mumbai. Gurjit Singh Kher is a leader of Shiv Sena (Shinde faction) and the president of ‘Sikhs in Maharashtra’ organization. He also shared a detailed note on Instagram, in which he criticized the filmmakers and called it a serious mistake.
He wrote, “I strongly condemn the blatant disrespect shown to Gurbani by the makers of ‘Dhurandhar 2’. Showing a character (@actormaddy) talking to @ranveersingh while smoking a cigarette and simultaneously reciting the sacred Gurbani ‘Sirso Pehchaniye Jo Lade Deen Ke Het’ is extremely sad and unacceptable.” The post further said, “Gurbani is not just a dialogue – it is divine and sacred, and has immense spiritual significance for the Sikh community. Such irresponsible portrayal shows ignorance and lack of sensitivity towards our religion.”
