Directed by Aditya Dhar, ‘Dhurandhar: The Revenge’ is not just a spy thriller, but it is a painful saga of an ordinary Punjabi Munde becoming a ‘patriotic spy’. The intensity with which Ranveer Singh has portrayed the dual personality of Jaskirat Singh Rangi and Hamza Ali Mazari in the film has shocked the audience. Let us understand how a young man from Pathankot became ‘Hamza’, the most trusted face of Pakistan’s terrorist camps.

Pathankot tragedy: When we lost faith in the system

The story of Jaskirat Singh Rangi begins with a 21-year-old ambitious young man who wanted to serve the country by joining the Indian Army like his father. But a land dispute ruins his happy family: the goons of an influential MLA kill Jaskirat’s father and brutally assault his sisters. When the police gave up under pressure from the government, Jaskirat lost faith in justice. To avenge his family, he himself took up arms and attacked the MLA’s house and killed 12 people.

From jail cell to RAW’s ‘Operation Dhurandhar’

Jaskirat was sentenced to death for murder. But his bravery and accurate marksmanship catches the attention of RAW officer Ajay Sanyal (R. Madhavan). Sanyal gave him a choice: “Hang on the noose or die an anonymous death for the country.” Jaskirat chose another path. He was given rigorous training and his old identity was erased and he was given a new name – Hamza Ali Mazari. In the first film ‘Dhurandhar’, we saw how Jaskirat infiltrated into Pakistan by posing as Hamza. He made a place in the radical organizations there and sent the most secret information to India. Ranveer Singh has shown that ‘silent pain’ in this character, where a person is forced to forget his soil and his language and live like an enemy.

How was Hamza born?

After being released from jail, Jaskirat took up rigorous training. He was given a new identity, and adopted the name Hamza Ali Mazari. This is where the story of the first film, ‘Dhurandhar’ begins, which depicts his espionage activities inside Pakistan. Ranveer Singh has given a brilliant performance in the film, which makes the audience feel Jaskirat’s pain deeply. ‘Dhurandhar: The Revenge’ is a saga of revenge, family tragedy and sacrifice for the country.

What is the fate of Hamza’s character?

At the end of ‘Dhurandhar: The Revenge’, Hamza returns safely to India, leaving behind his wife Yalina and son Zayan. Returning to his real identity Jaskirat, the spy travels from Delhi to Pathankot to meet his mother. He bursts into tears seeing his mother happy with her life, along with her sister and her two children. However, he remembers the initial words she said during his spy training – ‘Balidan Paramo Dharmah (Sacrifice is the greatest religion)’ – and turns back without meeting them. For them he was dead long ago. In the last few seconds, Jaskirat is shown resuming his training at the military camp.
