When Ranveer Singh’s name was announced for Bollywood’s most famous franchise ‘Don 3’ in the year 2023, there was an uproar in the cinema world. It was as shocking as it was exciting for the fans to see Ranveer as the new ‘Don’ after Amitabh Bachchan and Shahrukh Khan. This journey that started with a very stylish teaser has now turned into Bollywood’s biggest legal and diplomatic controversy, and Ranveer Singh is completely out of the film. After the initial enthusiasm, the long silence that surrounded the project gradually gave way to many serious and bitter controversies. Let us know what went wrong behind the scenes.
The big announcement of Don 3 that created a stir
When the makers introduced Ranveer Singh as the new Don, there was a flood of reactions on social media. While some fans were unsure whether someone else could replace Shah Rukh Khan, many were excited to see Ranveer bring his own unique energy to the franchise.
The teaser, directed by Farhan Akhtar, had hinted at a funky and stylish reboot. However, after the initial excitement, there was a sudden silence surrounding the film. No major details were revealed regarding the cast, shooting schedule or release timeframe. That silence gradually gave rise to speculation.
News of creative differences surfaced
Initially, rumors indicated that Ranveer Singh’s difficult run at the box office may have affected the project. But after the success of ‘Dhurandhar’, reports claimed that the real issue was creative differences between the actor and Excel Entertainment.

According to several reports, Ranveer was unhappy with the repeated production delays and the script not being finalized. It was also claimed that he wanted a darker, more aggressive take on Don—one with more intense action and a more serious tone—while Farhan reportedly wanted to stay closer to the style and world established in the previous films.
Things reportedly took a turn for the worse when Ranveer learned that the makers were considering other casting options despite him being associated with the film. Soon after, the news of his leaving the film became official.
The dispute turned into a legal and industry fight
What initially seemed to be a professional disagreement soon turned into something much bigger.Later, industry reports claimed that Excel Entertainment demanded damages of around Rs 40-45 crore from the actor, citing financial losses incurred during pre-production. The matter reportedly reached the Producers Guild of India for arbitration, and ultimately went to the Federation of Western India Cine Employees (FWICE). FWICE chief advisor Ashok Pandit later said that Farhan Akhtar and producer Ritesh Sidhwani had themselves approached the federation. According to him, a lot of expenditure had already been incurred, which included recce trips abroad, hotel bookings and arrangements for more than 200 crew members.
Pandit also claimed that Ranveer had signed a three-film deal with Excel Entertainment and was fully involved in script discussions and promotional shoots announcing the film.
FWICE issued instructions on non-cooperation
The controversy took a new turn when FWICE issued a non-cooperation directive against Ranveer Singh on May 26. The organization alleged that the actor did not respond to repeated requests to appear before them for discussions. Pandit said that until Ranveer himself resolves this issue, people working with him across India will not work with him in films, advertisements or other projects.
However, Ranveer did not comment directly on these allegations. His team later issued a statement saying that the actor has “deliberately decided to maintain silence” as he believes “it is best to resolve professional discussions and personal relationships with dignity, understanding and mutual respect.”
The statement also said that Ranveer still has “deep respect and goodwill” for everyone associated with the Don franchise.
Interestingly, Farhan Akhtar had hinted about the ongoing turmoil regarding this film long ago. Speaking to Hollywood Reporter India this year, the filmmaker had said, “Until something is actually captured on film, it cannot be considered certain.” Although he did not say anything directly on this controversy, his comment clearly reflected the uncertainty surrounding the project.
