Aamir Khan, who is called ‘Mr. Perfectionist’ of Bollywood, is very serious about his films and characters. However, there were some twists and turns in his illustrious career that did not live up to expectations. Recently, during the ‘Screen Academy Masterclass’ held at Whistling Woods International in Mumbai, Aamir Khan spoke openly about the failure of his high-budget film ‘Thugs of Hindostan’ released in 2018. He not only admitted that the film “flopped badly” at the box office, but also shared the big reason behind it. Aamir Khan described the film’s story as “very simple” and compared its basic format to the 1975 all-time blockbuster classic Sholay.
The actor said that as a rule, he always puts the script first when deciding to do a film. Recalling YRF’s film ‘Thugs of Hindostan’ directed by Vijay Krishna Acharya, Aamir said that he acted out of the box and later realized that it was a mistake. He also said that the version of the film released in theaters was very different from the original script, as several changes were made during the casting process.
Aamir explains how he usually chooses films
Aamir said that the role offered to him is not the main reason for agreeing to a film. Aamir said, “For me, what character I am playing comes second.” “So, when I say yes to ‘Dangal’, it’s because I like the script. It’s a great story, where every character has something great to do. Then I focus on my character, Mahavir. But I didn’t say yes to the film because ‘Mahavir’s a great character!'”
Aamir played the role of wrestler Mahavir Phogat in the film ‘Dangal’ directed by Nitish Tiwari, released in 2016. The film became the highest-grossing Indian film worldwide and grossed over Rs 2000 crore.

an exception
Aamir said that ‘Thugs of Hindostan’ was the only time when he broke his own rules. He said, “There was only one time when I gave more importance to my character than the story, but that film flopped badly.”
He further said that he was very impressed with the character ‘Firangi’ he played in the film. Aamir told “Firangi is a character who can’t be trusted at all. You don’t know when he’s telling the truth and when he’s not. He only cares about himself. I found him a very charming and interesting character. Some of his moments are wonderful.
Why did he compare it with ‘Sholay’?
Talking about the structure of the film, Aamir said, “The story of ‘Thugs of Hindostan’ is very simple. It is exactly like ‘Sholay’.” Then he counted the similarities between the two films

he said “In Sholay, Sanjeev Kumar’s character is Thakur, who has to take revenge after his family gets wiped out. And then two people come to help him – Jai (Amitabh Bachchan) and Veeru (Dharmendra). In this film, Zafira (Fatima Sana Shaikh)’s family gets wiped out. She needs help, and Firangi (Aamir) comes to help her.
