The Supreme Court on Monday heard the petition filed by Kannada actor Darshan, in which he has seriously accused the jail administration of not providing basic facilities like food. A bench of Justices JB Pardiwala and R Mahadevan issued notice to the Karnataka government in this matter and directed it to submit a detailed report within a week.A bench of Justices JB Pardiwala and R Mahadevan issued notice to the state government on the actor’s plea. Senior advocate Mukul Rohatgi, appearing for Darshan, said the actor was being deprived of basic facilities as the court had observed that he should not be given five-star facilities in jail.

He said, “This is the same case in which the judges canceled the bail of the petitioner, he is an actor…” The petitioner said, “The judges had remarked in their order that he should not get five-star facilities in the jail. Because of that direction, even basic facilities are not being provided to me.” On August 14 last year, the apex court had canceled the bail granted to Darshan and other accused in the case. Rohatgi told that the actor has been kept in a separate jail cell, where there is neither electricity nor food is being given to him. The top court took note of this and sought a report from the judge on the status of the case.

The court said, “We want to know how many witnesses have been examined and how many witnesses the state is going to examine.” We also want to know how much time the subordinate court is likely to take to complete the trial.” The bench said, ”We also want to know from the state whether the petitioner is being provided with the basic facilities to which undertrial prisoners are entitled. The registry will ensure that appropriate reports are received within a week.

Darshan, along with actress Pavitra Gowda and several others, is accused of kidnapping and torturing 33-year-old Renukaswamy. Renukaswamy was a fan of Pavitra and is accused of sending obscene messages to Pavitra. According to the police, Renukaswamy was held hostage and tortured for three days in a shed in Bengaluru in June 2024. His body was recovered from a drain.
