Shibayama Tsutomu, the director of ‘Doramon’, passed away. He was fighting a battle with cancer and was 84 years old. The Japanese animation cartoon show ‘Doraemon’ is very popular in India. Shibayama died on March 6, but his production company informed about his death a day earlier. He had also directed 22 films based on ‘Doraemon’.

Mumbai. Shibayama Tsutomu, director of children’s favorite cartoon show ‘Doraemon’, passed away. He was 84 years old. Shibayama directed Doraemon for more than two decades. His death was due to lung cancer. His death was confirmed by Ajia-do Animation Works on March 17, 2026. According to the studio, Shibayama died on March 6. He has had a long contribution to the animation industry. Doraemon is a Japanese animation cartoon show, which is very popular in India also. The character of ‘Doraemon’ is very popular among children.
“Shibayama Tsutomu, animation director, oversaw the ‘Doraemon’ series for more than 20 years. He died of lung cancer on March 6,” the studio said in its official statement. Besides, his huge contribution to the anime industry was also appreciated. In Japan he is often called the ‘Father of National Animation’.
Shibayama Tsutomu, as ‘Doraemon’, played an important role in shaping one of Japan’s favorite cultural exports. He directed the ‘Doraemon’ TV series in 1979 and directed 22 feature films based on the franchise, keeping it popular across generations.
Shibayama Tsutomu’s Journey
Shibayama Tsutomu started his journey in animation in 1963 at Toei Animation. After this he moved to A Production (now Shin-Ai Animation). Over the years, apart from ‘Doraemon’, he directed animation cartoon shows like ‘Chibi Maruko-chan’, ‘Lupin III’ and ‘Majime ni Fumajime Kaiketsu Jorori’.
Shibayama Tsutomu established production company
In 1978, Shibayama, along with Osamu Kobayashi and Michishiro Yamada, founded Ajiya-do Animation Works, which further strengthened his hold on the industry. The studio has confirmed that his funeral was held privately in accordance with the family’s wishes. A separate prayer meeting is expected to be held later.
